Qualifying for a major tournament is the result of months of planning, preparation, and collaboration. While performances on matchday will capture headlines, work behind the scenes is what allows teams to consistently perform when it matters most.

For Curaçao, reaching the World Cup represents far more than sporting success, it’s a milestone also marks the beginning of a new challenge.

With players arriving from clubs across more than a dozen leagues, the performance staff immediately shifted focus from qualification to preparation. Building a clear picture of each player’s physical condition before they arrive in camp provides the foundation for everything that follows.

Preparing Players for the Demands of Competition

Training is about more than physical conditioning. Sessions are designed to prepare players for the tactical and physical requirements of the team’s game model, ensuring athletes are ready to execute the demands of competition when it matters most.

Performance Coach, Angelo Cijntje says

“We’re trying to prepare the guys with the training plan, but also with the match plan. What is our game plan from the physical point? And that’s what we’re trying to plan and try to achieve on the pitch”.

By combining GPS data with the coaching strategy, practitioners can ensure training reflects the physical demands players will face in competition. Monitoring key metrics and training intensity helps coaches verify that sessions are aligned with the team’s objectives, while giving players the physical preparation needed to perform consistently on match day.

“Those guys have such a drive, such a passion for the game. When they step on the pitch in front of their people, the switch goes off and they go all in. Other opponents may be better, but they won’t outwork us”.

That connection between planning, monitoring and the mentality of the squad helps bridge the gap between preparation and performance.

Monitoring the Metrics That Matter

Rather than focusing on every available data point, the performance team prioritises the key metrics that provide the clearest picture of player readiness.

For Angelo, sprint distance, high intensity running and total distance covered remain essential measures of physical output during both training and matches. Alongside external load, heart rate data offers valuable insight into how well players are recovering between sessions.

“The most important thing for me with the heart rate is the recovery. Can I see some difference in the days and how they recover from the day before? It’s like when the heart rate is very up in comparison with the day before”.

Tracking these trends allows practitioners to identify changes in recovery status and make informed decisions around training loads, helping players remain physically prepared throughout demanding international windows.

Managing Recovery in a Congested Schedule

This World Cup presented unique challenges for every team. With limited recovery time between fixtures, increased travel demands and increased environmental demands, performance staff must carefully balance maintaining physical readiness while reducing accumulated fatigue.

The physical demands of each opponent are considered alongside the team’s own workload, allowing recovery strategies to be tailored to the schedule ahead.

Cijntje Continues,

“It’s going to be intensive, but the best thing is to recover as best as possible. Four days after that, the next one is standing ready for us”.

Having access to reliable performance data enables staff to monitor player responses after each match and adjust training accordingly, ensuring the squad remains prepared throughout the tournament.

“If you don’t have the data on the field, then you’re always too late with the adjustments. It’s great to have that on the pitch because we can anticipate the next step”.

Together, these insights help ensure the squad remains physically prepared throughout the tournament.

Fast, Reliable Data Sharing

International football requires constant communication between, medical teams and coaching staff, as well as with players’ own clubs. With players arriving from different environments, integrating performance information quickly becomes essential.

Building relationships with clubs helps create a clearer picture of each player’s recent workload, while rapid access to GPS data allows insights to be shared across the performance department without delay.

“We want the data quite fast so we can update it to the medical staff or to the performance staff. The other coaches want some inside information from the data”.

As teams move from flight to game,  and stage to stage, having a platform that delivers data quickly allows staff to make timely decisions in a fast moving tournament environment. The simple workflow and responsive support also allow practitioners to spend less time managing technology and more time supporting players.

Supporting Performance at Every Stage

For performance staff at the World Cup, athlete monitoring is about providing the objective information needed to support planning, recovery and communication throughout an international campaign, in an easy, coach-friendly way.

For Curaçao, that process begins long before players arrive in camp, bringing together information from clubs across the world before translating it into training plans that prepare the squad for the physical demands of tournament football.

As Curaçao preparedto compete on football’s biggest stage, that connected approach helped the performance team manage the demands of the tournament and ensuring the squad is in a position to perform when it matters most.
